Village Hall

The Mortimer West End Village Hall represents the thriving hub of the village, with many village clubs and societies having used it as their meeting place since the hall first opened in 1913.

The first structure to be erected in 1912 was the main hall and a detached coal store and toilet on land owned by the Benyon Estate.  The Estate provided the materials and the resident craftsmen built the hall and reportedly placed a bottle of beer under the floor.

The Parish Room, as it was known, was opened in March 1913.  During the First World War it was used as a school, with three teachers.  Mr Benyon furnished it for this purpose.

In 1920 a small hall was built connecting the main hall with the coal store.  In those days the hall had no ceilings.  The walls were plastered up to the window sill level only and the heating was provided by Tortoise stoves.

In 1931 the land and hall was transferred from J H Benyon to Trustees.  In February 1964 the hall became a charity and a management committee was formed.

During the past 40 years many changes have taken place in and around the hall.  The hall is maintained to a high standard and many projects are planned over the next 5 years.  In July 2004, a toilet for the disabled was installed.  In 2005 a loop system was installed to assist those with hearing disabilities.

The hall is used by all the village organisations and attracts many bookings from the surrounding area.

The Benyon Trust is still there to give us support in our major projects.

Bookings for the hall can be made through Mrs B Donnelly on 0118 933 2913
